Olan Quattro
As our lives and personal records become increasingly digital, paper has devolved into a material of memory. All those handwritten letters, printed photographs, and scribbled journals are remnants of a quickly disappearing analog world. As a collage artist in a digital world, my work is informed by the intersection of memory, myth and fragmentation. My layered compositions subvert symbols of early Americana in order to illustrate the complexity of our contemporary world.
I am a third-generation artist. My materials are culled from old family letters, photographs, books and catalogues of early American art. My family inheritance was the paper trails left behind from generations. These forgotten papers are my palette. I repurpose these papers, creating new contexts and stories.
We live in a rapidly changing and uncertain world. Collage is a necessary way for me to untangle these complications and to search for some kind of beauty in the chaos. Collage is how I make sense of the world.
