Strange Ancestors is a series of work exploring how memory can be curated and redefined. I am interested in family myths and distortions. The work is layered with old family letters, photographs and book pageses. These are the artifacts of my history. These collages are quiet images pulled and manipulated from an embellished past. I come from a family of artists and writers. I am a third-generation visual artist. My inheritance is the paper, drawings, letters, journals, ticket stubs and photographs from my relatives going back generations. These forgotten papers are my palette. I have travelled and moved with boxes and suitcases filled with the debris of their forgotten lives. The family stories I grew up hearing were larger than life tales. According to the stories, my genealogy includes magical creatures, witches, and mysterious strangers. These figures inhabit my family history. Collage is my way to tell these stories, to write these poems, to paint these pictures.
