As a collage artist, I am attuned to the idea of paper as a material of memory, holding secrets, sharing dreams. The layered compositions of my collages subvert symbols of early Americana in order to illustrate the state of our contemporary world. My work is informed by the intersection of memory, myth and fantasy. Made with gouache, watercolor, and paper collage, my compositions veer into the realm of dreams and allegory. I am especially drawn to the depiction of women, finding their strength, taking flight into the unknown. These women are not held back by history but are tearing down old stereotypes in order to move forward. Collage is an ideal way to tangle and rework our ideas of femininity and strength.
