- Curated Memories, 2017
This series references memory and fragmentation. I layer old family letters, photographs and book pages underneath my images. These are the artifacts of my history. I'm interested in how memory can be curated and redefined. My collages are quiet images pulled and manipulated from an embellished past. I come from a family of artists and writers. I am a third-generation visual artist. My inheritance is the paper, drawings, photographs, letters, journals and ticket stubs from my relatives going back generations. Their forgotten papers are my palette. I have travelled and moved with suitcases filled with the debris of forgotten lives. The family stories I grew up hearing were larger than life tales. According to the stories, my genealogy includes magical creatures, witches and mysterious strangers. My female ancestors were especially strong figures, in my mind they are bird women. They have power; they hold firmly to their hopes and dreams. They can take to the skies in flight.
